Description

Rather unorthodox Monster Hunt map taking place in a greyscaled world.

As you will notice playing the map, this level is more of an arcade gameplay-based map rather than a moody, atmospheric adventure. I chose the monotonous grey theme to allow for large quantities of monsters without impacting too much the performance, due to the absence of lighting (the whole level is zonelighted).

There are indeed lots of monsters, 900 through the whole map. The health of most of them has been decreased to compensate for their high numbers, so with a group of good players it should be possible to reach the end in about 15 minutes.

I balanced the level so that there would be very few dead spots, the whole map is action packed and you will keep shooting for most of the time. There are five respawn points and I added also some shortcuts that will teleport you back into the action in case you were left behind.

Due to the nature of the level item placement is quite generous, you will find a lot of ammo and health lying around. Ammo packs give you double of the usual ammo amount and respawn in a couple of seconds.


Make sure to play with quite some players (or bots) since the map is pretty hard (but definitely doable, even in classic MH).
You will have to keep moving to avoid the bunch of projectiles flying around, camping will not get you very far. Depending on your play style some sections might be a little harder than others, try to not limit yourself to only your favourite weapon since each situation requires a different approach.

If you are using classic MH I recommend playing in Turbo Mode, the extra movement speed and jump height help to avoid damage quite a lot.


The map contains lots of custom scripts for monsters, I modified them to avoid infighting (which would be quite a problem here, since I generously mixed races all over the map) and fixed a couple of incorrect behaviours (e.g. the two Queens telefragging each other).

To match the greyscale textures I greyscaled all the skins for weapons, ammo and monsters, but I decided to keep all the projectiles colored since otherwise they would have been rather hard to see. The only exception to this is the Titan boulder, which stood out like a punch in the eye.


Bots will play the map rather well (considering MH Bot support is pretty broken), but they will not be able to complete the map unassisted. I spent a lot of time trying to fix them but there are some places where they get stuck for no apparent reason, this is due to the large scale of the level.
I recommend to order them to follow you, that way they will work correctly through the whole map. If you see them getting stuck and not following you (like in the room right after the Titan fight) just go ahead alone and they will catch up using teleporters.

Installation

Unzip MH-DarkWhite, then copy the following files in the respective directories of your Unreal Tournament folder:
  MH-DarkWhite.unr in Maps\
  kajahtaa.umx and Complian_b.umx in Music\

Then either doubleclick the MH-DarkWhite.unr file, or start a match selecting the map in the menu, or type "open MH-DarkWhite" in the game console.

You need the Monster Hunt mod to play this map.
